Antique Bracket Clocks

Summary of Antique Bracket clocks

Spring driven clocks that made from the 1660's through to the end of the Victorian period. Fine quality clocks displaying the best of English craftsmanship, from simple timepieces to complicated musical and grand sonnerie movements repeating hours and quarters.

History of Bracket Clocks

Although described as bracket clocks most examples do not and have never been accompanied by a matching bracket. In the 17th century the manufacture a mainspring was a difficult process and so a clock that could sit on a table and be reasonably portable, was a more expensive and complicated machine to produce. From the Charles 2nd period onwards the cases mirrored very closely those of the longcase in both the style and materials used. Early clocks were veneered in ebony, marquetry and walnut with the later introduction of mahogany in mid 18th century.
