Tunbridge Ware obelisk thermometer. Circa 1900.

Circa 1880, Tunbridge Wells Kent. England

Good original condition with all tesserae intact and sound. Thermometer in working order but the spirit colour has faded.

Dimensions: 20.00cm high x 6.50cm wide x 6.50cm deep

The thermometer tube is spirit filled and placed on an engraved bone scale. The main obelisk centre is solid rosewood with the tesserae inlaid into the surface of the wood. There are geometric designs around the base with marquetry rural scenes on three sides of the central plinth. These pastoral vistas have become obscure with age but as many of the designs were taken from Berlin Work pattern books it’s difficult to know how clear they were when first made.
All the different coloured tesserae are made from naturally coloured woods of which there were around 140 all of these were taken from not only various woods but also the cuts of the timber. One of the most prized hues was a green, which originated from a fallen oak branch that developed a fungal infection. By way of highlighting this scarcity there appear to be only six pieces of these tiny pieces set into the side parquetry panels.
