Circa 1819, Royal Tunbridge Wells

Working thermometer. The case with good patina and original surface.

Dimensions: 16.00cm high x 10.00cm wide x 5.00cm deep

Rosewood case decorated with tessallated mosaic Tunbridge ware. Henry Hollamby had a showroom at No. 12 the Pantiles, Tunbridge Wells and was one of the largest producers, one of three manufactures who exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851.
The mercury thermometer has a scale made of bone with painted calibrations in Fahrenheit and RĂ©aumur . An open cavity allows some light onto the back of the thermometer giving the scale a slight luminescence. The thermometers scientific merit was probably secondary to its role as a souvenir to the many Victorians who visited Tunbridge Wells to take the waters and enjoy the scenery.
