Summary of French Decorative clocks
Ormolu French decorative antique clocks. Decorative styles including Art nouveau and Art Deco
History of French Decorative Clocks
French clocks are usually very distinguishable from their English counterparts. The French were highly skilled at the decorative applied arts such as gilding, enamelling and casting and these are at the fore of their domestic clocks. The movements are of fine quality also but generally smaller and lighter in construction. The styles were often influenced by the influential designers such as Charles Boulle whose work adorned the grand Pallais and châteaux. Classical themes were popular during both the Louis XVI and Napoleonic periods. A more egalitarian flair is evident either side of 1900 with firstly the flamboyance of art nouveau and latterly the more streamlined art deco.
